Nkhotakota flood survivors receive relief items

Women’s World Day of Prayer have donated assorted relief items to people affected by floods in Traditional Authority (T/A) Nkhanga in Nkhotakota District.

Speaking on Monday during the donation, one of the beneficiaries, Malita Banda, 42, from group village head Chikupweche thanked the women for the support.

“We are still at Chikupweche Evacuation Camp and we need humanitarian support before we return to our villages,” she said.

Banda appealed to other well-wishers to help them with resources to rebuild their destroyed homes.

The women’s group chairperson Esther Manda said the support came after observing that people in camps are in need of food and other items.

She said they will continue to encourage women to embrace the spirit of sharing regardless of their religious affiliations.

“As women from various churches, we have to complement government’s effort to help the flood survivors recover from their loss,” said Manda.

Nkhotakota District Council spokesperson Wongani Mkandawire described the support as a blessing, saying it will help households that continue to feel the pain of the flash floods.

“We thank various partners and well-wishers for the support they render to us. However, we plead with other well-wishers to support the survivors,” he said.

The items included maize flour, soya pieces, salt and soap worth K1.8 million and were donated to three camps, namely Matiki, Dwangwa and Chikupweche in T/A Nkhanga and other camps in Senior Chief Kanyenda in the district.
